Jonathan was saved at an early age and
became a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served on the Media
Ministry team, with the Cornerstone Ministry, and sang with the Voices of
Praise Youth Choir. Jonathan was a guest speaker at the Back to
School Rally at Rock of Ages Baptist Church in 2014. At that time,
he spoke about the Wall of Jericho and how God works through hopeless
situations. He said, "I believe that God does His best work in
seemingly hopeless situations."
Jonathan attended Morristown West High
School. There he became a nose guard for the Trojan football team;
they quickly became his family. He also sang in the school choir,
which he loved so much. Jonathan was best known at school for his
infectious smile and his ability to light up any room he entered.
Jonathan was an avid supporter
for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. He was chosen to
represent the organization as a Youth Survivor in 2012. He truly
enjoyed working at the WCRK Radio-thon each year to raise money for Relay for
Life.
This young man loved his music! Whether
it was gospel, classical, or old school, he was always listening to some type
of music. He loved to sing and would gladly break out a tune at any
given moment. He most enjoyed hearing his family sing, especially
when it happened spontaneously.
We believe that God shared Jonathan
with us to teach us many life lessons. He taught us how to handle suffering
with dignity. He taught us how to love a little more and to hug a
little tighter. He taught us about valuing family, whether it was
biological, spiritual or by choice (like his Trojan family). Most of
all, he taught us how to smile. Jonathan never lost hope. He never
stopped fighting. He never stopped smiling. He never
stopped touching lives. He taught us these lessons, and now it is
our responsibility to carry out the legacy that he left for us.
Jonathan was preceded in death by his
uncle and namesake, Jonathan Scott Rucker. He will continue to live
on through his parents, Brian and Leigh Anne; his sisters, Briana and Kelley;
his brother, Brian Fluker, Jr.; his grandparents, Jerri Rucker, Curtis and
Dorothy Rucker, Homer and Catherine Gooden; uncles, Bryan Rucker, Homer T.
Gooden; aunt, Felecia Akles; a host of great aunts and great uncles, cousins,
and an abundance of amazing friends and supporters.
Our family is so grateful for the many
individuals and organizations who traveled this journey with us, including
Jonathan’s caregivers, our prayer warriors, our church families, our faithful
Trojan Nation family, and so many others. We cannot begin to
express to you how you have touched our lives.
The family will receive friends on Saturday,
August 29, 2015 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Arrowhead Church, 4101 Maple Valley
Road, with the Celebration of Life to follow at 4 p.m. Interment will be on Sunday, August 30, 2015
at 2 p.m. at Hamblen Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests
that donations be made at First Tennessee Bank toward the Jonathan Fluker
Memorial Scholarship fund.
